Thank you for asking this important and considerate question.  I would focus on items that are soft and/or can play some music.  In addition there are toys that can help keep skills or possibly develop a few.

You may wish to consider Kimochis which may help to identify feelings.

Also, I am not sure if you are using sign language- but Scholastic has a wonderful series of literature classics with music, voice and sign language.  You can find them here:
