Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk-

Languages are best learned when they are paired with everyday situations.  Integration of the second language in to daily events and activities seems to be the most meaningful.  This may include going to restaurants, museums and searching the library in order to be an active language learner!

For a visual-spatial learner one may need to use multi-modalities to learn the language, such as seeing a prompt and hearing words spoken.  Also, programs such as Rosetta Stone may be useful as they integrate visual and auditory learning in to an easy program suitable for a vast span of ages.

Good luck!

Also there are many great online sites, such as MomtoMadre.com which offer second language learners and their parents information from within the bilingual and bicultural communities.

Good luck!

Hi Sulli,

Great question! Visual spatial learners learn best through pictures and visuals. They also learn well by seeing and observing. Therefore, you are absolutely correct that you may need to vary the techniques for teaching a visual spatial learner a second language. Traditional "repeat after me" methods aren't going to be as effective, but teaching methods that include visual images are most likely going to do the trick.

Try incorporating reading material, movies with subtitles, and flashcards with rich images into the process. You may wish to allow visual spatial learners to make use of computer programs that teach second languages, too, as these programs often include colorful images. Allow visual spatial learners to draw images or create visual representations of vocabulary or sentences in the second language.

Lastly, avoid repetition or rote memorization. These techniques tend to be less effective for visual spatial learners.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Great question!  Visual aides are very important for students to be able to understand what is being said in another language.  Stephen Krashen (language expert) calls it comprehensible input.  I've created a video that shows how much visual aides can help understand content in a foreign language.  (see the link to my blog below)

This is just an idea but you could write the letter and make the letter into a picture thats' word starts with the letter. For example you could write the lower case letter a and draw the letter into an apple. You could draw the letter Bb as a balloon (balloon lettering) and draw a string on it to make a balloon. This may be a bit confusing but if you understand the idea, I truly hope that you will find it helpful.
