Here is a book list specifically for summer reading.  In the middle of the page you can select the grade level you wish to find books for, which ranges from preschool through high school.

My answer is this - Unless your child is required to read certain books during the summer for school purposes, let them read whatever they wish.  Lists that were previously suggested are a great jumping off point.  Also considering doing a search for Jim Trelease.

In addition to all the great links and suggestions below, you can usually go to any big bookstore where they have a specific summer reading section which is grade specific.
