The term transgene describes a segment of DNA that has a gene sequence that has been isolated from one organism and is introduced into another organism. This segment of DNA may be able to produce RNA or protein in that plant or animal, now known as a transgenic organism, or it might change the normal function of the transgenic organism's genes.
