What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk!

Bravo to you for mentoring a student at a difficult age-

Try asking the student what he feels are his strengths and weaknesses with his study skills and learning.  Does he feel that he prefers visual or auditory material?  Is he a strong reader or not?

Then set up reasonable goals for him, such as "I will complete my homework or attempt to complete it all week".  (If it is too difficult, have the student circle the questions that are challenging and then write why he feels they are too difficult- such as he doesn't comprehend the question or he can't figure our the math problem)

Middle school students are among the most difficult to understand as their emotions and behaviors are up and down.  As a former principal of a middle school, there were days when I wondered how to survive.  Yet they are great kids.

To mentor effectively you need to understand these behaviors and why they are occurring.  You need to understand that thoughts, attitudes, etc., are just a part of their lives.

Mentoring these students also involves letting them talk while not dictating or being too aggressive with them.  Listen, listen, listen.  It works!

Good luck.
