When my daughter started kindergarten I had similar concerns as you. So I talked with the school's principal. She informed me about the school's safety policies and procedures, and also shared that the school hadn't had any issues with kidnappings, on-site shootings, or other random acts of mass violence in the last 30 years, or ever as far as she knew. She also let me know how issues with student-on-student violence are handled. By the end of our conversation, I felt a lot better about enrolling my child at the school, and continue to monitor the school's approach to safety.
In addition to talking with the school's principal, you could also look at Community Reviews of the school in SchoolFinder:

Or talk with parents of kids who are already at the school -- what have their experiences been? If/when there were problems, how well were they handled?
Also, the local police department may have a log of incidents at or near the school. Some police departments publish a 'police blotter' in the local newspaper, and some even post that content on their department website too.
The Family Watchdog organization also provides information to help you protect your loved ones, including a National Sex Offender Registry:
