Desert plants have many adaptations for survival in dry conditions, including spines or use of stems instead of leaves for photosynthesis (leaves have a large surface area for water to evaporate), and the ability to stay dormant during the worst times and quickly emerge, bloom, and form seeds during the best times (usually the spring).
