svendy_wendy asks:

how can i potty train my almost four year old developmentaly delayed twins?

My name is wendy. My twin boys were diagnosed with developmental delays about 2 years ago. They are delayed because they cant talk yet. they are said to be at a two year old level right now. so as you can imagine trying to potty train them has been very difficult. Ive tried alot of differnt things with them to help and also tried to teach them with repetition like during bath times and clean up times to see if a rutine like other things i tought them would help and so far only got one of them to actually pee in the potty once. do you have any suggestions by chance?

What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk,

I am curious if your developmentally delayed children are involved with an early intervention program through the public schools. These programs usually include parent - child- teacher home visits or consultations.  These meetings can include, in some circumstances, toilet training.

You may wish to consult with your school district about these services.

Also, the following website may be of help:

And keep in mind that visual charts, use of tangible prizes (such as stickers) and verbal praise all help to train a child.  Yet, a child will only train when they are physically ready, so your pediatrician may need to be consulted first.

Good luck!
