In literature, the primary character, the protagonist or main character is the central figure of a story.  I added a link to Wikipedia's encyclopedia entry on "Protagonist/ Primary Character" (link 1) as well as the definition of "Protagonist" from Merriam-Webster's on-line dictionary (link 2).
