Q:

Looking for a private or charter school in California that has a "no homework" policy.

"My son and daughter are very bright. His second grade teacher had very little homework and he scored in the 97 percentile of the STAR test. Last year he had tons of homework and his scores dropped. By the time they get home, maybe eat a snack, then have 2-hours of homework, they are tired, grumpy and say they hate school. It breaks my heart. They are only in 3rd and 4th grade. The teachers and administrators are very arrogant and refuse to listen when this issue comes up. I'm currently looking for a private or charter school in California that has a no homework policy. Any suggestions?"

Hi Maggie, Here's a blog post about a California school district that abolished homework this year:

Seems there are quite a few stories mentioned on this blog that might inspire you: http://stophomework.com/

I'm also including below some resources on Education.com you may find helpful. Good luck!

Homework is a myth. I agree that children do not have to be loaded with excess homework to achieve what they need to. We homeschool and we are proof!!

I am also looking for a school with very little or no homework.  I took my daughter out of her school towards the end of the past school year for a variety of things that I feel were inappropriate and did not agree with.  As I homeschooled her the rest of the year I learned how unnecessary homework is.  All work can mostly be done while at school.  A little review and a special project once in awhile, but the rest can and should be accomplished during the long hours the children are at school.  So as I look for new schooling for our daughter I am looking for such for her.  Does anyone know of a school in California with little or no homework....for our family, we are also looking for a Christian based school too.
