What the Expert Says:

Hello Bec3!
Children in a school classroom should be supervised by a certificated teacher at all times.  Once in a while, the teacher may need to leave the room for a few minutes (bathroom break) while the assistant is left in the room.  The classroom door should be left open and the teacher in the next classroom should be informed that the teacher has left for a moment.  The next door teacher would keep an eye on the students until the teacher returns.  If the assistant needs to leave on an emergency, s/he should inform the office and the principal that there's an emergency.  The principal would be able to handle the situation and send someone or come himself/herself to supervise.  It's important that the children are supervised at all times.  In many classrooms, teachers have taught the children to be self governing when the teacher may be working with a small group or meeting with a parent.  Hope this helps!
