Q:
Using proper English
Hello,
This communiqué is being sent with hopes that you can clarify something for me.
Have the Rules of Proper English changed since I went to school (LSU, Class of 1970)? There are a lot of people today using phrases like "Tulane is where my friend went to school at", and "I am reporting from where the accident happened at", and "The Northshore is where I live at", and "Where are you going to?". This includes many of our television reporters and news anchors.
Now, I understand that "Where y'at" has a place in N'awlins; no problem. But in everyday serious and professional dialog, it's like fingernails on a blackboard to me. Am I one of the few who remembers my basic English courses (and my mother's admonishments!)? Or did the rules change while I was sleeping?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.
