Ginkies asks:

What are the pros and cons to moving our 13 year old daughter from 7th grade to 8th grade?

My daughter turned 13 in November and is currently in 7th grade. She attends a small, private school and is doing 8th/9th grade level work - getting A's and B's. She is very mature for her age and hangs out with kids that are her age but they are in 8th grade (she is very social and can hang with younger kids too, but most of her friends are 13 or older). She approached us with an interest in moving to 8th grade. We agree and would like to move her to 8th grade - she is already doing the work, and socially and emotionally she does best with her peer group - right now she is the oldest in her class. What are the pros and cons to moving her to 8th grade that we should consider before a decision is made? We will be attending a meeting with the head of the school/her teacher to discuss this, but we want to be prepared too.

What the Expert Says:

Dear Ginkies;

Discuss the other end--meaning how old would she be at high school graduation. will she likely be prepared with the social skills to negotiate high school?  If she is ready now, can she handle the discipline of independent studies in high school?  The good news is she asked you to move her up. The pros are she won't be bored and will be with students she likes,the cons are she will be moving up the physical body to a group that may be ahead. Weigh your choice and have many family discussions and go with the recommendation of the school.
