If you want to teach single digit multiplication start by using little items (i.e. blocks, crayons) and grouping them.  

For example:
2x3= make two groups with three items in each.  Then the student can count the total number of blocks to get the answer.

After the student understands the concept of multiplication then practice, practice, practice.
