Linda Chavez, Chairman of the Center for Equal Opportunity, a nonprofit public policy research organization, isn't so convinced. "We're hearing a lot about how we need to pour more money into education and NCLB," Chavez says. "I personally think money is not the cure." Chavez stresses the importance of holding teachers accountable.

As a teacher of 30 years experience at many grade levels, I agree that a good teacher can teach without books, supplies, or technology. The question is, with all the emphasis on accountability, and technology use in the classroom (not school labs, which are generally unavailable on a regular basis), how can we, as teachers, be expected to provide up to date instruction, individualized and remedial lessons for almost every student in our classes, and meet the requirements of NCLB? Money is being thrown right and left, at everything except education.

This is a time of Leave No Child Untested. Accountability has evolved into testing, testing, testing. What this also means is teachers "teaching to the test."
Setting standards is critical to the educational system. Educators must show progress.

NCLB has also supported high qualifications for educators, such as national certification with monetary reward (National Board of Professional Teaching Standards). Much is expected of teachers and the expectations are difficult to accomplish without the supports in place.

I disagree with Linda Chavez. Teachers are underpaid and under appreciated. Unless we decide to prioritize teaching as an honored profession and support education as vital to our country's growth and well-being, we will find that our system will be mediocre. Under-qualified teachers will be the only ones left in the classrooms!

this phenomenon is across the board and we are having the same problem in south africa.  the teachers are frustrated because of the continuous testing and not at the level of the child but in the grade that he is in.  too many conepts have to be learnt in order to equip the teacher who has just managed to grasp one when another is implemented.  unfortunately when the state implements something, then we as teachers have no say in the matter.  now, understandably, this is the reason why many leave the field of education.
