Q:
How can I get the school to listen to my son and me?
He has a hard time getting along with the teachers and students, and they make matters worse.

What the Expert Says:

Have you had a meeting with the school principal and one or more of his teachers? You do not say what or if you have already tryed to work with the school. I am not sure how to answer until I know if you have already had your sit down. Meeting with the school would be the first step in your process to create a resolution that would improve your sons ability to get along with teacher and students. If its across the board, meaning your child does not get along PERIOD in school then you may need to have your son looked at by a child psychologist. These are the options I would suggust you look into. The time is now. Nothing changes until you create a change.

As a teacher, I know that I respond best when parents start with an informal message via email or phone that says "Hi! Thanks for the great unit about dinosaurs last week, Bobby was so excited! I know that sometimes his behavior is a challenge in the classroom and I'd like to discuss  how I can work with you to help him. Thanks for your dedication to my son, it really means alot."

This does two thing:
one- it's a little disarming. Instead of "what does parent x want me to do to accomodate her child now!!" I feel like the parent respects what I am trying to do, and wants to make it better for all of us.
and two- It lets me know the parent is willing to do what ever it takes to help thier chilld, and is able to do it in a respectful way. Thats great!

Hope this helps!

Well, after making several attempts, I would take him out of the school. That's if he and you are just miserable. A child's well being should be intact above all things. Try homeschooling the rest of the year or seeking out a private tutor/school. We had a similar situation and found that homeschooling was the answer. Very surprisingly, most problems go away and you will find that sweet little boy you once knew :) Good Luck
