Q:

Should schools have age restrictions for prom dates?

According to news media reports, a North Carolina high school student was forbidden by school administration from bringing her 23-year-old brother to the school's prom as her date, because he was considered too old to attend. His legal access to alcohol and concerns about an adult male socializing with teen girls at the prom were cited as reasons for the age restriction. http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2010...

What do you think: do you agree with age restrictions for school prom dates? If so, what age would you suggest the school set as the limit? Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you for contacting Education.com

The school made this decision to protect their students.  It's very possible that this young man had only good intentions of attending the prom with his sister, but the school had to make their decision based on the over all picture of what it would look like if adults start attending their proms.  Access to alcohol most definately played a big factor in this decision.

If schools do set age limits for their prom attendees, it would make sense that they be of high school age, or under 20 years old.  Schools are having to make more and more rules and regulations, but hopefully they are in the best interests of their students and will help keep our kids safe.

This is an interesting dilemma.

I didn't grow up in this country and I'm not familiar with the concept of prom. but  I think the age should be limited to school age kids. If this is high-school prom only kids up to the age of 18 can go (There will be special cases, but they can be dealt with on a case by case basis)

Having other young adults change the dynamics of the event and might makes other kids feel a little uncomfortable. There are plenty of other events outside the school where teenagers and young adults can hang out together.

I think the school administration should set the rule, but if this can be worked out in collaboration with student council it would be even better.
