Q:
Are schools required by law to provide oral interpreters for hard of hearing students who do not use sign or lip read, but need someone to help them?
I have a student (first grade) who is hard of hearing.  He currently has a sign translator.  He does not, however, rely on sign.  He relies on oral communication.(He has an FM system, hearing aides).  The translator is currently helping him understand things that he misses, even with the FM, but she helps him verbally.  He does a small amount of lip reading, but that is also not his primary form of communication. It has been decided that he no longer needs the interpreter, since he doesn't use sign.  However, he does still need the help with communication (being understood and getting the information he misses).  He is doing fairly well academically, so the school said he will not have an interpreter or an aide to help him next year.  His mom still wants an aide.  I read about oral transliterators, or voice interpreters.  Is he eligible for this type of service and is the school required to provide it?
