Searching for Daycare for a 6month old

Friends have told me that the best thing to do when searching for childcare is to start before the kid is even born. While that initially sounded nuts to me, I have been chasing leads for a month now and nothing has panned out. What have your experiences been and what do you recommend?

We were on a waiting list for two years before my son got into the daycare of our choice. When he was an infant I put him in a facility that had great infant care, so-so preschool age care and no waiting list. As soon as he was old enough to need a more stimulating environment, we finally got into a wonderful daycare. The good news is that daycare waiting lists aren't anywhere as bad as the used to be due to higher unemployment. A local non-profit helped me identify a center that met our needs while we were on the waiting list.
