The 'flu' shot (for 'influenza') is recommended for all children, particularly from 6 months to 8 years of age.  The flu shot prevents or minimizes the effects of the illness, which can occasionally be devastating especially in young and elderly subjects.  

The flu shot should be given each year, since the virus changes each year, so the vaccine has to be adjusted each year to the new strain specific for the year.
