It is best to begin learning how to add and subtract by using objects.  This way the child can see the objects being joined together or see what happens when you actually take some away.  When this is understood, then move to tools such as a number line or ten frame.  You want to use the actual equation as a last step since this is abstract and hard for students to understand what + and - really mean.
