Q:

My sister cuts herself

Okay my sister is 14. She barely began doing this. She told me she does it because of her ex bf. She broke up with him but he got a new gf so fast she went into depression. We never noticed until she started to cut herself. I don't know how to help her. She told me they could replace me so fast everybody is better without me. I'm 20 and I have a lot going on but I need to help her and I don't know how to do it. My dad and mom know we are all trying to help but we don't know how. What do we do?

What the Expert Says:

Self injury to ones self is a means that some people use to express or release emotional pain. This may include carving, scratching on the arm or leg, superficial cuts, cigarette burns, pulling out the hair, or picking at their skin.  It is important for the person who self injures to express their feelings openly with a person that they feel safe with--often this is a counselor or therapist especially for more serious cases. In less severe cases, journaling or other more positive ways of coping with intense feelings can be helpful. If your sister has been diagnosed with depression, she may already be seeing a counselor who should be able to help her with this issue.
