We need to eliminate the numbers on the left side of the equation so that we're left with: Variable = number.

k5-k3=40 can be grouped into:
k(5-3) = 40 which reduces to
k2=40

we want to get the k alone, so we get rid of the 2 on the left side by dividing by 2 on both sides:
(k2)/2 = 40/2

and we're left with:
k = 20
