It would be helpful to know how old your son is.  The majority of children have better handwriting (as do most adults) if there is a line or lines for them to write on or between.  If he is under the age of 5 he will need large spaces to write in and on as this age and younger write more with shoulder movements than finger movements.  The typical kdg student needs lines that are spaced 3/4 inch apart for ease of writing.  Its always helpful to have a line or lines to place those letters on but remember to make them appropriate for his age.  You can find handwriting developmental skills for each age and pencil grips at www.lynslines.wordpress.com
