What the Expert Says:

Since your son's functioning at school is so poor, it sounds like it may be time to try and find some alternatives for him.  We would start this journey by taking him to a child psychologist for an assessment and evaluation.  This will give you a look at some generic information about what your son may be going through.  The psychologist will then be able to provide you with referrals for what the next step for your son may be.  It may be that he would benefit most from outpatient counseling.  It may be that he needs an alternative school setting.  It may be that residential treatment is best for him.  Whatever the need, the psychologist can help you begin the process of setting your son up for success.  Talk to your school counselor or go to the website www.211.org and type in your city.  It will then pull up a referral hotline that you can call and they will give you the numbers of child psychologists in your area.

Parenting can be a very trying job.  We are glad you have the strength to do what is best for your family. We wish you luck!
