How do I help my son stay focused?

My son is having difficulty in staying focus, his teacher has told me that there are alot of times he looks like his mind is somewhere else almost like day dreaming. I don't know how to help him stay focus only by just telling him to pay attention. Please help me on things I can do to improve his focusing part. Thank you.

Dear Jimmy:

We don't know how old your son is but a good start is to be sure he sleeps well and eats breakfast. Afternoon exercise helps create the evening fatigue that promotes good sleep. Speak with your pediatrician about this as well. Most boys who show signs of Attention Deficit Disorder or learning disabilities will start at about age 7. Of course, speak with your son's teacher to check up on progress. Best wishes in helping him out.

You might consult the Sensory Processing Disorder foundation. This disorder can often cause what seems to be "day dreaming" and lack of focus, but at times it can be caused by other issues. A sensory kid cannot attend at times due to understimulation or over stimulation at school or at play. Also testing for ADHD can be helpful. There are therapies available for SPD and medications/therapies for ADHD.
