Q:

My step son keeps speaking negatively about himself

I have a 6 1/2 year old son who spends weeks at our home and weekends with his grandparents (at the request of his grandparents). He always asks for new toys and video games and we tell him if he does well in school/behaves well we will get him the items. Lately he has been saying how dumb and stupid he is and how he is a bad kid and we hate him. I continually tell him that is not true and go out of my way to show him that he is special and smart and that we love him but he will continue to argue that no, he is stupid etc etc. I finally had what seemed like a break through with him where he said we never buy him anything because he acts bad and is stupid, I explained to him he was not around on weekends for us to go and do the things we wants and that is the reason. I feel guilty for not following up on rewarding behavor but refuse to spoil him by randomly going out and buying him stuff. I also feel he may be manipulating us to get more things (he is very manipulative) but he has gotten out of control with the negative things he says about himself! Help!
