The scientific method starts with asking a question, doing background research, forming a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis with an experiment, analyzing the results to draw a conclusion to prove or disprove your hypothesis.  There's an excellent map of the process and details on how to do a science project on ScienceBuddies.com:
