The scientific method starts with asking a question, doing background research, forming a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis with an experiment, analyzing the results to draw a conclusion to prove or disprove your hypothesis.  There's an excellent map of the process and details on how to do a science project on ScienceBuddies.com:

Congratulations on your Science Project!  Aside from the scientific method which describes hypothesis, control, etc, there are steps to help you plan your project.
The following website references how to plan for your project.  For example, picking a topic and doing your homework and research.
http://www.scifair.org/articles/steps.shtml
The next site is another list of ten steps which also includes the Scientific Method.
Good luck on your project!
