What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk.

Whenever a parent has serious concerns about a child's learning and behavior there are two things I tend to recommend to be completed as soon as possible.

1- Consider consulting with the child's physician to be sure there are no medical concerns. It would be helpful if you could write a list of all your concerns to share during an appointment and give a copy to the doctor to keep.

If you feel that your son's health or well being is at risk- please do not postpone calling for immediate help.

2- Ask for a meeting of teachers and professionals at your child's school district to help determine if there are significant issues that explain the "block" with his learning and sudden onset of behavioral changes.  You can simply write a letter, such as you submitted here.  Deliver or send to the school principal / guidance counselor/ psychologist on staff.  By law, if your child is in public school they need to respond to you within 30 days of receipt and convene a meeting.

In addition, I have added a resource for you below.

I wish you much luck and hope that all is better for your family soon.
