What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk!

A ten year old who is experiencing serious language and comprehension difficulties may need more intensive help than is provided by a regular education teacher.  Consider writing a formal request for assessment of your child's learning skills and possible consideration for adjunct programs. For more information about the special education process you can go to

Also, your local school district should be able to help "walk" you through the step by step process for consideration of assessment and possible ancillary programs.

Additionally, you may wish to consider multi-modal techniques for helping your child.  This may include the use of sign language to help bridge gaps with language and speech difficulties.

Best wishes!

Hi MotherHelper,

There are lots of things you can do to help develop language and reading comprehension skills in your child. Below are some links to some resources that I think might be helpful to you. The first two links are links to some reading comprehension activities you can do with your child at home. They are fun and educational (promise!). The third link is an activity that works on developing language skills. Lastly, a great way to help foster language skills in your child is through imaginative play. I've included a link to an article (the last link) that has some information and some tips on what you can do. Please feel free to browse the activity section of our site for more ideas for great educational activities you can do with your child at home. Hope this is helpful!
