Q:

What should I do before I travel and get into a foreign (USA) school?

hello , I'm a girl from Iraq , I'm a high school student , me and my family are going to the USA (Detroit) soon , we are waiting for our immigration application to be done , my question is when we reach there (USA) , Will they put me in a grade according to my paper qualification school (certification) or according to the USA school test?
my second question , what will happen if I reach there in school's half year?
note : I've missed a grade in Iraq because we thought we'll travel before the school ends.
please help , or give me any information ...

Hi Lolifofo,

To get the most accurate answer to your question, I recommend your parents contact the school district for the high school you are planning to attend -- to learn more about their enrollment policies (and how they would determine which grade you'd attend). Here is the website for the Detroit Public Schools district (which may or may not be the corresponding district for your new residence): http://www.detroitk12.org/

If that is the district in which you'd be attending school, here is information for your parents about their enrollment policies: http://www.detroit.k12.mi.us/orientationKit/documents/Enrolling_in_Detroit_Public_Schools.pdf

I also found some program information on their site specific to immigrant students (students who have been in the United States for less than three years):
http://www.detroit.k12.mi.us/admin/academic_affairs/ells-gl/programs/

The district should also be able to inform your parents about whether or not you can enroll mid-year, or if you'll need to wait until the next enrollment period.

I'm including below some additional resources your family may find helpful in adjusting to your new home. Good luck -- I hope all goes well with your move and at your new school.
