Hi there,
I, like a lot of people, remember the silly ways that my parents got me to behave. Those tricks, like having a "Who can be quiet the longest?" competition on long drives or "I'll give you a dime to run around the block" when we were bouncing off the walls, can't be found in parenting books. They are tricks of the parenting trade that get passed along behind closed doors. What are some tricks that parents are using today?

OK, this one is a little odd but if it helps other parents.... When my kids were potty training I had a hard time getting them to try going before they really felt like they had to go (like when we were getting in the car and I didn't want to have to pull over 15 minutes into the trip). They would just sit on the potty saying "I don't have to go!". Eventually I tried this trick...I would tell them to think about waterfalls and it ALWAYS worked! A few seconds after I said the word "waterfall" they'd pee and we were on our way!<br />

You know the counting thing? "I'm gonna count to 5... one...two...three..."
I started counting backwards and have gotten MUCH better results. My kids know not to let me get to one even if they aren't really paying attention when I start.
