Cells (and organisms) use energy for things like growing, dividing, making proteins, metabolizing food, and removing wastes, all being processes that require cells to make or break chemical bonds and move matter from one place to another. In terms of the 'how', cells do this in a process called the Krebs Cycle which involves the role of ATP in energy storage.
