Some points to remember in using the natural and logical consequences in democratic parenting are:

  • Be both firm and kind. Use a friendly tone of voice. * Provide choices and accept the teen's decision.
  • Separate the deed from the doer. Indicate your respect for the teen even though the behavior is not acceptable.
  • As you follow through with a consequence, give assurance that there will be an opportunity to change the decision later.
  • Avoid fights. They indicate lack of respect for the other person. Do not give in. That indicates lack of respect for yourself.
  • Be patient. It will take time for natural and logical consequences to be effective.
