Amby Baby Motion Beds/Hammocks Recalled

What This Means

The CPSC, Health Canada, and Amby Baby USA are aware of two U.S. infant suffocation deaths in the Amby Baby hammock: a 4-month-old girl in Georgia died in June 2009; a 5-month-old boy in Oregon died in August 2009. Three other incidents were also reported: in one, an infant suffered an eye injury from fallen metal fragments; the other two incidents did not result in injury.

The Amby Baby Motion Bed is made of a fabric hammock connected by a large spring and metal crossbar to a steel frame. Only a single model was sold, and the hammock can be identified by a label sewn onto the hammock that reads "Amby - Babies Love It, Naturally."

When the fabric of the hammock swings or tilts, the motion may cause babies to roll and become entrapped or wedged in a position where they cannot breathe.

Online at Ambybaby.com and other Internet retailers from January 2003 through October 2009 for about $250.

What to Do Next

Immediately stop using the Amby Baby motion beds/hammocks and contact Amby Baby USA to request a free repair kit, which the company hopes to provide to consumers starting in January 2010. There will be no repair kit offered for beds sold in Canada.
