Tools of the Reading Process
The tools of the reading process questions on the reading section of the ParaPro Assessment assess the test taker's ability to help students with the following skills:
- using reading strategies, such as predicting what will come next in a story
- recognizing the parts of a word, such as its prefix, suffix, or root
- using a dictionary
You will also be expected to ask questions which help students interpret a text, as well as help you understand their ability to comprehend its meaning. As an assistant to the classroom teacher, you will also be expected to follow his or her written directions.
For example, the following question shows how the ParaPro Assessment may test your ability to help students recognize the parts of a word.
- A student in a class is trying to understand the meaning of the word hopped. Which word has the same suffix?
- topping
- holy
- reasoned
- jump
The suffix is the part at the end of the word that helps tell what it means. In the case of hopped, the suffix is -ed, which means that the verb is in the past tense. The only word in the answer choices with the same suffix is reasoned, which means choice c is correct.
