Autoinmunidad
El sistema inmunológico defiende al cuerpo contra infecciones y algunas otras enfermedades. Se compone de distintos órganos, células y proteínas llamadas “anticuerpos”. Identifica, ataca y destruye gérmenes y otras sustancias extrañas. A veces, el sistema inmunológico comete un error y ataca los tejidos o los órganos del propio cuerpo. Esto se denomina “autoinmunidad”. La diabetes tipo 1 es un ejemplo de enfermedad autoinmune, en la que el sistema inmunológico destruye las células del páncreas que producen insulina.
