Do's and Don'ts

The following is a list summary of some general do's and don'ts pertaining to oral interviews.

DO

DON'T

  • relax
  • be late for your oral interview
  • smile
  • interrupt the interviewers
  • be well groomed and neatly attired
  • ramble on with your answers
  • maintain a good posture
  • have anything (gum) in your mouth
  • make eye contact with the interviewers
  • apologize for not knowing an answer
  • show confidence
  • take a negative attitude toward interviewers
  • speak at an audible level and clearly
  • appear over confident or cocky
  • vary the pitch and tone of your voice
  • tell jokes or wisecracks or be sarcastic
  • act in a professional manner
  • use slang or jargon
  • demonstrate a positive motivated attitude
  • use foul language
  • take time to listen to the questions
  • wear dark sunglasses
  • admit what you do not know
  • use an overabundance of gestures
  • answer all questions honestly
  • get into an argument or debate with an interviewer
