Ethics Lesson For the Substitute Teacher (page 4)

What is My Role in the School and Community?

It’s a bright spring day and you’re walking through the parking lot of the local grocery store, about a half mile from a school that you sub in regularly and only a quarter mile from your house. Deep in thought, you’re approached by someone who calls your name. It’s your longtime neighbor, Lin Jackson.

After a few pleasantries, Lin says, “You know, I’m really concerned about Ms. Monaco.”

The neighbor is referring to her son’s third-grade teacher at Peck School—the same school where you subbed that day.

Before you can respond, the neighbor goes into a two minute diatribe about Ms. Monaco and ends with, “What do you think of her?”

Your response should sound something like this. “You sound really upset, Lin, and I sympathize. But it would be unethical for me to discuss any teacher at the school. I work there, too, you know.”

As a sub, it’s not at all unusual to live in the same community in which you work. Your friends and neighbors may be tempted to ask your opinion about other students, school personnel, or school politics. Be extremely cautious.

Summary

Every substitute teacher is expected to behave ethically and treat students, parents, and colleagues with respect. Today, ethics is a major point of emphasis in school systems nationwide. You’ll never have ethical difficulties if you follow these guidelines:

  • Protect children from conditions harmful to learning and keep them safe.
  • Make yourself aware of school crisis codes and OSHA/FDA standards.
  • Adhere to the drug-free workplace policy.
  • Protect students from unnecessary embarrassment, harassment, and discrimination.
  • Respect the privacy of students, their parents, and your colleagues.
  • Be honest with colleagues and with the students.
  • Be punctual, be dependable, and dress professionally.
  • Avoid gossiping with professional colleagues and with outsiders who want your opinion about school-related subjects. •
  • Be aware of the legal ramifications of your actions at all times.

In every case, follow all school board ethics guidelines. They have been developed to protect you from the truly unpleasant consequences that can occur when ethics are breached.
