Step 4—Review the Passage
After actively reading the passage, take a few seconds to look over the main idea, the topic sentences, or other elements you have marked. Ask yourself what you have just read. Your goal is not to understand the passage thoroughly, but rather to get the gist of it. Quickly summarize it in your own words.
Don't get hung up on difficult phrasing or technical elements in the passage that you might not even need to know. Instead of focusing on absorbing specific details, just know the location of details in the passage. Remember, you can refer back to the passage several times while answering the questions. Focus on the general direction, main ideas, organization, purpose, and point of view of the passage, rather than learning details.
Step 5—Answer the Questions
Now it's time to answer the questions. Base your answers only on what is stated and implied in the passage. Some answer choices will try to trick you with information that is beyond the scope of the passage. Read all five multiple-choice answers before rushing to choose one. Eliminate and mark off as many choices as possible. If you eliminate three of the answer choices, reach your decision quickly between the remaining two. After you have timed yourself working with the practice tests in this book, you will have a good idea of your time limitations.
