Tame the Media by Talking TV

Tame the Media by Talking TV
Parent Inspiration

New and improved! Ways you can tame media influences on your child.

What You Need to Know

Your child is barraged by media messages in commercials and programs. They do influence him. But he doesn’t have to be unduly influenced. Here are ways to help your child be a critical consumer of media.

  • Make TV time family time, watching programs together and turning the TV off when the show is over.
  • Talk about ways the values of the characters on TV differ from your own family values.
  • Use TV programs to spark interest in something and delve into it deeper. There are wonderful documentaries on TV about animals, science, history, and much more. If your child is interested, help him follow up with a trip to the library, museum, or park.

How You Can Help

  • Snack smart. It seems that watching TV and snacking go hand in hand. Could it be because of all those food ads? Anyway, resist eating unhealthy stuff by posting a list of “approved” snacks on the fridge and keep them stocked.
  • Just say no. Get away from the tube and do something else. Ride a bike, take a hike, play a game, read a book, play music. There’s a longer list in the full article.
