Parent Inspiration

Yuck! Composting sounds so rotten. The benefits of the rich, new soil are well worth getting a little dirt on your hands.

What You Need To Know

If you’re worried about the food your kids eat, consider more organic produce and composting the refuse. The combination of choices reduces the chemicals in the soil, saves the water supply, and even produces new dirt for your yard or garden. It also teaches your kids about the natural cycle of growth, death, decay, and regeneration with hands-on lessons about how to wield a pitchfork.

How You Can Help

Contemporary composting has advanced well beyond the smelly heap in the garden.

  1. Containers. From attractive kitchen bins to complete large cans for the yard, manufacturers have created a wide range of products that make composting convenient, easy, and unobtrusive.
  2. Materials. Garden stores and other retailers stock accelerants to advance the first batch of raw materials with natural ingredients necessary for the process to get moving.
  3. Guidelines. Most container companies include a short lists of what can degrade and what can’t. If not, check with a garden store or online resource.
  4. Classes. Check with a garden or home improvement store about workshops focusing on composting. Likewise, community centers and local gardening organizations often host classes that explain the how-to and suggest where to find the products you’ll need.
