Correcting Run-On Sentences and Sentence Fragments

While you won't likely be expected to identify run-on sentences or sentence fragments in the error identification part of the writing section, you may be expected to identify these grammatical issues for students—and in a later question on the ParaPro Assessment. What is wrong with the following sentence?

I went to the store I bought some eggs.

There are two separate statements. It is not grammatically correct to combine them without any punctuation. A student could write this as two sentences, separated by a period. Or the student could include some punctuation and a conjunction to combine the thoughts. Those possible solutions are shown in the following rewritten sentences.

I went to the store. I bought some eggs.

I went to the store, and I bought some eggs.

A sentence fragment has the opposite problem of a run-on sentence; it simply does not have enough information to stand on its own as a sentence. As mentioned earlier, the two main parts of a sentence are a subject and a predicate (a verb that tells what the subject is doing). For example, look at the following sentence fragment:

Billy, the tallest student in the class.

The subject is clearly Billy. The information after the comma describes him. But nothing is going on—there is no predicate! As a result, this is not a correct sentence. It can be resolved by adding a verb, such as the word "is" in the sentence shown below:

Billy, the tallest student, is my best friend.
What is missing from the sentence fragment below?
Ran the entire way down the street.

There is a verb here—ran—but we don't know who ran. The subject is missing! Therefore, this is not a correct sentence. Adding a subject will fix it, such as the word Tara in the sentence below:

Tara ran the entire way down the street.
