Health Experts Continue Weighing Possible Risks vs. Benefits of Eating Fish During Pregnancy

The fear of harm from ingesting mercury has made many pregnant women cautious about partaking of too much fish, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to caution expectant moms to keep their seafood consumption to a minimum.

But now a group committed to maternal and child health is recommending at least 12 ounces of fish a week for pregnant and breastfeeding women — advice that conflicts with the FDA's few-fish stance of no more than 12 ounces each week. So, what's an expectant or nursing mom to do?

Most women, in general, just aren't getting enough fish, says a team of professors and doctors of nutrition and obstetrics who partnered with the nonprofit group Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB). The brain-boosting benefits of fish far outweigh the "exceedingly rare" risks of harm from mercury for both mom and baby, says the HMHB.

So, the group is bucking the FDA's position and recommending that fish become a staple in the diets of breastfeeding mothers, moms-to-be, and even women trying to get pregnant. According to the group, restrictions on fish intake during pregnancy may be putting some women and their children at greater health risk than that posed by eating mercury-containing fish during pregnancy.

But here's the catch — immediately following the HMHB's release of its statement, other experts have expressed surprise and concern about the group's recommendations, considering they conflict with the guidelines currently endorsed by the FDA, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other major medical organizations. Also, some have pointed to possible "tainting" of the HMHB's position on the issue since the group has received financial support by a group linked to the fish industry.

The AAP acknowledges that there is, indeed, a concern that pregnant and nursing moms aren't getting enough omega-3 fatty acids — the "good kinds of fat" that are plentiful in fish and are certainly beneficial for babies' brain and vision development.

But, says the AAP, the concerns about contaminated fish are still there, not just from mercury, but also harmful PCBs and other potentially toxic chemicals.
