What You Need To Know
Back to School Preparation
Whether they are starting preschool, kindergarten or first grade, some children may be worried about the new setting and the new experience. Experts say there are general things that parents and families can do to help their children make a successful transition.
- Discuss the changes that will be taking place.
- Reading and discussing books is a great way to make him or her comfortable with a new experience.
- In the days and weeks before school starts, help your child ease into the new environment and adjust to the new routine. Arrange to visit the school and classroom with your child, and, if possible, meet the teacher.
- Have your child layout his clothes or pack a backpack for the first day. If possible, arrive at the new school early on the first few days to give your child time to settle in. Always say good-bye, and reassure your child you will see them at the end of the day.
How You Can Help
If you feel your child is really anxious about back to school time you can do even more to help promote peace of mind and improve their confidence. Here are a few suggestions.
- Read specific books like Timothy Goes to School by Rosemary Wells or Will I have a Friend? By Miriam Cohen to help prepare your little one to back to school.
- Set clear guidelines so there is no confusion. “When you come home you can have a snack and then we begin homework at 3:30pm. I will show you what that looks like on the clock”
- Pack a healthy snack or meal for school to help promote energy and a good attitude.
- Talk up the importance of school. It is important your child have a healthy opinion of school. “School is so important if you want to be a vet”.

- Make their favorite dinner as a reward for getting through the first week of school successfully.
