Be an MVP (Most Valuable Parent)
Parent Inspiration

Want your child to get the most out of team sports? Here's the hard truth.

What You Need To Know

There's something about team sports that causes certain parents to take on a different persona--booing the other team, or shouting out advice from the sidelines that conflicts the coach. Parents must keep in mind that the real goal is helping your child learn to win or lose with grace. Put these pointers to good use:

  • Make sure your child is playing for the right reasons. (Because you always dreamed of being Joe Dimaggio isn't one of them.)
  • Don't require your child to practice. If they don't do it on their own, that should tell you something.
  • Cheer for the whole team, not just your child. (Trash talking the opposing team is a big no-no.)
  • Keep your perspective. While most kids won't go pro, they will go on to become productive adults. Let their experience in sports boost their confidence, discipline, and sense of teamwork.

How Can You Help

On game day, offer to bring healthy and easy-to-eat snacks like crackers, bananas or quartered oranges, and bottled water.

Ask the coach what you can do to lend a hand. Chances are they'll be surprised and grateful, and put you to work fundraising or taking dirty towels home to wash.
