In addition to reading aloud, there are endless possibilities for links to literature that encourage responses. The table below provides response possibilities for home and school. Remember, though, that the primary purpose of reading with young children is for enjoyment. Plan only those response activities that occur naturally from books.

At Preschool or Child-Care Center At Home
Storytelling Tell family stories or make up stories
Book-related dramatic play Help your child act out favorite books
Story-retelling Encourage your child to tell the story to you
Shared book experience using big books Make "little books" with your child
Art projects Help your child draw pictures about favorite stories
Cooking Let your child help you make simple recipes
Music and movement Sing songs to your child and make up movements
Story dictation Write down stories your child dictates to you
Puppets Make puppets from small paper bags and have a play
Flannel-board stories Use the small flannel board in the take-home packet to help your child retell the story
