Math Skills and Knowledge Review

ETS, the maker of the ParaPro Assessment, says that there are five different math subjects to know for the math section of the test. There will be about 18 questions on the math section that will test your knowledge of these subjects in a general way. The subjects are as follows, with bullet points to show how each subject will be tested on the ParaPro Assessment:

  1. Arithmetic
    • add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole number, fractions, and decimals
    • understand the place-value system for both decimals and whole numbers
    • recognize the meaning of math terms and symbols, such as product, quotient, ÷, <, or >
    • use percentages
    • understand that numbers can be expressed in different ways, such as one hundredth, 0.01, and 1%
    • identify the relative value of numbers, such as the fact that 2.5 is between 2 and 3
    • use estimation
    • demonstrate knowledge of the order of operations
  2. Algebra
    • solve single-step linear equations with one variable, such as x + 1 = 3
    • identify a pattern and the numbers that follow
  3. Geometry
    • recognize and name geometric shapes, such as triangles, quadrilaterals, or other polygons
    • find the perimeter, area, and volume for shapes
    • graph points and identify ordered pairs on a coordinate plane
  4. Measurement
    • convert units within the same system, such as 2 feet to 24 inches or 200 centimeters to 2 meters
    • understand that information can be demonstrated in multiple ways, such as 1¢, $0.01, and 1 penny
  5. Data Organization and Interpretation
    • create and interpret tables, graphs, or charts, and be able to identify trends
    • calculate the mean, median, and mode
