Do you look forward to your child laughing at your jokes? If you're the parent of a second grader, good things are in store.
What You Need To Know
By the time a child is seven or eight years old, their understanding of language increases greatly. Here are the key listening milestones at this age:
- Understanding the subtleties of irony, sarcasm, and the other building blocks of humor
- Listening for longer periods of time and grasping new information
- Building their vocabularies through listening
- Learning by listening and participating in class discussions
How You Can Help
Although your child can now read and write on their own, reading to them is still a great idea. You can build their vocabulary and understanding of the world by reading aloud from books that are beyond their current reading level. Read from poetry, creative nonfiction, or graphic novels to expand their knowledge of different types of writing.
Read to your child's interests. If your little guy is obsessed with dinosaurs, read to him from science books like A Dinosaur Named Sue, as well as fictional stories about all things prehistoric.
