Oh, no! Mystery meat again! Make your child’s lunch a healthy one.
What You Need to Know
The results seem divided when it comes to parents’ opinions about the nutritional value of school lunches. But whatever parents think, the kids probably hate them. Try these ways to make lunch more, um, appetizing for your child.
- Go over the week’s menu and help your child select the healthiest options (that he’ll eat, of course).
- Stress that a bag of chips or an ice cream bar isn’t a valid meal.
- Pack your child’s lunch and make it one that he’ll want to eat and not trade off. Avoid pre-packed meals and snacks.
How You Can Help
- Help your child make better choices. Fresh fruits and veggies rather than fried food, for example. Whole grain instead of white bread. Water instead of soda. You get the idea.
- Perk up packed lunches by allowing your child to help chose what goes in the bag. Here are some tasty options that he will want to eat: pita wraps filled with fresh goodies; hummus and pita points; fresh fruits; trail mix; air-popped popcorn; veggies and dip; yogurt with granola, fruit, or nut topping.
